I hope everyone’s week has been going well?
Earlier this year, I posted out a couple of blogs with helpful tips when attending face to face interviews and phone interviews, so I thought I would finish off the trilogy this week with a blog on helpful tips for video interviews.
When preparing for or during a video interview, you want to bare in mind both the tips mentioned for face to face and phone interviews, as it is almost like a combined interview.
Be Ready – In a face to face interview, it is polite to arrive slightly early for your interview, so you are not rushing and you can keep calm. The same applies to a video interview. You don’t want to miss the call if you are running late and if you are rushing to answer the call, the interviewers will be able to see that you may be a bit flustered. So sit down slightly before the scheduled interview time to make sure you are calm and prepared.
First Impressions – Although you can’t shake the interviewer’s hand on arrival, it is still important to make a great first impression in other ways. Smile, be friendly, have eye contact, and introduce yourself politely and you will be off to a good start.
Quiet Surrounding – Set up your computer/tablet in quiet surroundings before your interview. You want to choose somewhere that will be quiet and no one can distract you. Make sure you are somewhere where there is no-one or minimal people around that may be distracting by walking back and forth behind you. This will not only be distracting for the interviewers, but you will also see it on your screen and may throw you off track.
Appearance – It is important to be dressed appropriately for interviews. Unless stated before hand, always dress smart. Even through you are on a video interview, you may think it is acceptable for example to wear your pyjama bottoms as they can only see you from your waist up, but if for some reason during the interview, you need to stand up, this isn’t a great look. Dressing smart will make you feel more professional and may help you perform better.
Good Internet Connection – Before your interview, plan where you want to take the video call and ensure that the internet connection is strong, as the last thing that you want to happen is that you are mid interview and your internet drops off and you lose the connection. If you are taking the video interview in a public area, test the internet connection first.
Take Notes/Make Notes – It is always handy to take notes in with you. If you have researched the company before hand, take some notes in with you on what the company does and what services they offer as this may help you answer some questions. Also taking notes is always handy as interviews are not just for the interviewer to choose the best fit candidate, but also for the candidate to decide if the position is right for them. So if you are offered the position, you can read over your notes and ensure the position is something that you are interested in.
With our blog trilogy of helpful tips during face to face, phone, and video interviews, you should be covered for every situation. Many of the tips can be transferred over to which ever method of interview you are undertaking, but make sure to read up on the interview tips before the big day, so you are prepared and ready to nail your interview! If you have any tips that you swear by for any type of interview, let us know in the comments below.
Have a great weekend.
